We have a couple of vacancies for alternates right now 2019 Work Plan The Work Plan determines the tasks undertaken by the Commission and its subcommittees each year Is formed by the Commission during its Annual Retreat in November of each year. Workplan Goals Support the civic life of our citizens through the Arts Establish Federal Way as a unique Arts Community that reflects our rich culture and diversity Engage Federal Way youth in community arts events These are our goals. To grow in diversity and cultural recognition for all our citizens. To reach out to youth throughout the community. And to Work to establish Federal Way as a destination Arts Community. Gallery Presentations Knutzen Family Theatre Gallery City Hall Gallery We help maintain art shows in two galleries in city buildings. One in city hall right outside this room, the other in the Knutzen Theater at Dumas Bay. This year’s competition is on September 13. We are proud to have provided a forum for these artists to display their works in 2017. 2019 Community Events The Arts Commission also sponsors and provides help for a number of local community events held throughout the year. Summer Sounds Concerts at Steel Lake Park July 17 Unified Culture July 24 No Rules August 8 Chrome Molly In the months of July and August there are outdoor concerts on Wednesday evenings at Steel Lake Park, the Summer Sounds event. One of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, Twelfth Night brims with a lust for life and a longing for love. This is a highly popular kick-off to the christmas season, featuring Santa Claus and Mrs Claus plus musical performances. Goal 2 Establish Federal Way as a unique Arts Community that reflects our rich culture and diversity We reached a major milestone this past year with the opening of the new Peforming Arts and Event Center. This is a facility for us to take pride in as it has quickly become the focal point of a Federal Way’s cultural scene. Arts Festival at the PAEC August 2020 Visual Arts Poetry Dance Here’s our lates Traffic Graffic, at the instersection of 312th and Dash Pt Road. The design is an original from Commissioner Gary Gillespie. Federal Way ‘Traffic Graffics’ The commission is very proud of the annual progress of the Mini-Mural Artwork Project, headed by Commissioner Gary Gillespie. This project involves having artists design colorful murals that are used to decorate the traffic light boxes at intersections throughout the city. The process entails printing the digital files onto sheets of vinyl wrap. Goal 3 Engage Federal Way youth in community arts events and organizations I’ve lived here for 50 years now, and I can tell you that Federal Way is all about families. Its vital that we support our younger citizens in the cultural life of the community. Here’s some of the projects the commission is engaged in directly related to youth in the community. ‘What Liberty Means to Me’ Municipal Court Art Competition Grades K-8 ‘What Liberty Means to Me’ The court contest has a theme of ‘what liberty means to me’ and has divisions for elementary ‘What Liberty Means to Me’ Federal Way Municipal Court Student Art Competition May 1 The contest is promoted by the court so that through the students artwork the court can become a less intimidating place. ‘What Liberty Means to Me’ Federal Way Municipal Court Student Art Competition Art Submissions Due by May 1 We have a youth oriented competition that is taking place right now. Each year the Municipal Court and the Arts Commission sponsor a K-12 art competition with the theme ‘What Liberty Means To Me’. Entries for this competition are due May 1st. There are cash prizes and the winners will have their work displayed in the Municipal Court. Hachinohe Sister City Photo Project November 2018 PAEC Gallery Show & Workshop for High School Photography Students by the Hachinohe Art Museum These past few months we have also been working with our sister city of Hachnohe Japan on an arts project to celebrate the 25th year of our city’s relationship. The Hachinohe Art museum will bring a photo gallery display about every day life in Hachinohe to be shown in the PAEC this December. This will include a workshop for High School Photography students put on by curators from their art musuem. Our students worrk work will be sent back to Japan for display in the Hachinohe Art Museium. Hachinohe Sister City Photo Project January 2019 Hachinohe Museum of Art 60 messages left for Citizens of Federal Way “My child submitted a photo of Hachinohe’s food (uni, or sea urchin), and I came to the exhibit to see it. I was very moved by all the photos from this project.
