Dear Mr. Swanzy:
Thank you for your recent submittal. Unfortunately, the City of Federal Way does not accept
sign permits through the mail. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We
have found that applications submitted by mail generally do not meet the minimum submittal
requirements, resulting in significant delays in processing. Therefore, we are returning your
application.
Please find enclosed with your materials a copy of our sign permit application intake checklist.
It would be beneficial for you to review your plans for completeness based on the checklist prior
to bringing them to our permit counter. We accept applications and the appropriate plan review
fee between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday. However, as sign
intake can be a lengthy process, please come in before 4:15 PM to submit your permit. Please be
aware that we cannot accept sign permit applications that are missing items required by the
checklist.
I did take a very preliminary look at your plans, and noted a few potential issues:
1. It appears that you are proposing a 13' tall sign(measured from grade). The maximum sign
height allowed by code in that zone is 12'. The raised planter box does count toward total sign
height.
2. The proposed sign is 121.6 square feet in area. An area around the base of the sign equal to
the sign area is supposed to be landscaped; however, the proposed landscaping area is only110
square feet in area. You may request, in writing, a minor deviation to the landscaping
requirement as part of your application. The site is fairly constrained, so the City would likely
support your request and allow you to install just the 110 square feet.
3. The proposed location of the sign and landscaping is within an existing parking stall, which
would be removed as part of your application. Ordinarily, when installation of a sign reduces
a
parking for a site, a parking study is required. However, since the sign is being relocated due to
City right of way improvements, we will NOT require a parking study for this application.
4. According to the submitted structural calculations,the sign is being installed over a
stormwater vault. However, according to the site plan, the sign is not being placed over the
vault. The vault is located from stall #4 (as numbered on your site plan) southward. If you wish
to place the sign in stall #3, as indicated on your site plan,the Public Works Department may
have issues with the location. Please clarify where the sign is to be located.
Please be aware that further issues may arise during the formal review process.

requirements, etc.; or if you would like a copy of the City's sign code, please call
(253) 661-4115. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and would be pleased to assist you
with the application process by answering any questions you may have.
