SOUND TRANSITFEDERAL WAY LINK EXTENSIONSTATION NAMING

Policy Question
Should the City Council support the preferred station name as determined by a public survey through Sound Transit’s Federal Way Link Extension outreach effort?
Background:
Sound Transit policy requires station names to meet the following requirements:
Reflect the nature of the environment: neighborhoods, street names, landmarks, and geographical locations.
Be brief and easy to remember.
Comply with federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and requirements.
Be no more than 30 characters long.
Avoid commercial references.
Avoid names or words similar to existing Sound Transit station names.
Sound Transit presented the public an opportunity to vote on a list of possible station names and public as well as an option to write-in a vote.
People were able to vote through an online open house that was posted from November 13th to December 13th. Additionally, paper ballots were accepted at two in-person open houses, on
November 13th at Highline College and November 20th at the Federal Way PAEC.

Options & Mayor’s Recommendation
Option 1 – Support naming the future light rail station the ‘Federal Way Transit Center Station’.
Option 2 – Do not support the name and provide direction to staff.
The Mayor recommends approving Option 1.
On February 3, 2020 the Land Use and Transportation Committee voted to advance Option 1 to Council Business.
