Yes, middle and elementary school students will be bussed from this location. We won’t have middle school students
cross Highway 99.
We have a bus routing tool on our website that is helpful for finding these types of things. Sometimes it won’t show a
bus stop because we currently don’t have students near that location that warrants a bus stop but once they get
enrolled their address would get routed to a bus.

Thank you for your response. To clarify, both middle school and elementary school students would be bussed from this
location?
As for bus maneuvering, there are 2 access points into the project that are connected and connect to existing thru‐
roads. We will follow up with your or the City staff to make sure you receive a copy of the submittal preliminary plat
drawings.

It is difficult from the pdf to understand the proposed improvements.
As far as the district adding in a bus stop in the middle of the development for middle school students, we adjust our bus
stops continually as students enroll and withdraw. They are not set like metro bus stops. Where the development is
located we would bus both our middle school and elementary school students and would set the bus stops accordingly.
The school access analysis would need to ensure safe walking routes through the development and if they were walking
to school such as our high school students will do to and from this development. We also need to ensure that our
school buses have safe access in and out of the development. We won’t be able to tell if the buses have access until we
see the road type on the submitted plans to the city. Something to keep in mind is that while a road might be able to
accommodate a fire truck in an emergency, our buses do not bend in the middle the way a fire truck does. We need
more space to maneuver. If there is street parking, that will have to be taken into consideration.

Hi Jennifer,
With the updated (2019‐2020) school transportation data available, and having close to a completed preliminary plat
layout ready, I wanted to follow up with you regarding the safe school access for the Woodlands at Redondo Creek
project.

Attached is an overall School Access Analysis that depicts sidewalk, shoulder and crosswalk locations, in addition to
available walking routes for the high school, middle school and elementary school students. There is a designated bus
stop on S 308th St for students to get to Sacajawea Middle School, while the high school and elementary students will
“walk” to school.
There is one area of potential concern along the walking route to the elementary school from the proposed
development (bubbled in the attached). The applicant’s proposed improvements are as follows and noted on the
attached:
1. Student Pedestrian signs at the new intersection from the development at 20th Ave S and the eastern side of the
corner from 300th to 20th;
2. Shoulder line pavement marking along the 20th Ave S and S 300th St sections to where the road narrows after
21st toward the school;
3. Crosswalk striping pavement marking at the 300th and 21st Ave S intersection and at the location where the road
narrows, from the south to the north side of 300th.
Also, with 67 proposed new homes, we would like the district to consider adding a bus stop for the middle school
students at or near the project site to accommodate the new students to be transported to Sacajawea.
Please let me know if you have any questions and would like to further discuss the conditions of the existing and
proposed school access. We are submitting for a preliminary plat application to the City of Federal Way in about 3 weeks
and would appreciate the opportunity to include these proposed improvements in the plans with the district’s blessing.
Please let me know if you’ll be able to review and provide a letter to the City regarding the proposed in that time frame.

Hi Savanna,
For the School Access Analysis, we would want to look at the path to and from the proposed development and what that
walking path would look like. Is it well lit? Is there a need for a crosswalk or sidewalks? Looking at the level
(elementary, middle, and high school) are there major roads to be crossed.
You can plug in addresses here to look for bus or walking information. The walking map you provided is strictly the area
that has been determined for the distance from the school where bus transportation is not provided. That means for
proposed new developments, if it falls in that area, then you need to document the walking paths to and from either the
school or the bus stop to document safe travel paths for our scholars.
