Dear Mr. Kuver: At your request, we have completed a soil analysis and drainage review for the proposed extension at the residence, above, and we are pleased to present the following results. SCOPE OF PROJECT The project involves sampling the soil on the property to determine the percolation rate, and designing an outflow trench and retention system to convey additional roof drainage from the proposed residence addition. SITE DESCRIPTION • The residence is a 25 year-old two-story home located on generally flat-lying ground. The backyard slopes northward -1%, and covers an area of approximately 3,000 square feet ( `60' by -50' ) . The proposed addition will add a 30' by 12' extension onto the back of the residence (15' by 40' of roof surface area) . Trees are located around the north perimeter of the backyard, with a small garden in the northeast corner of • the lot. FIELD INVESTIGATION On the morning of August 8, 1991, a Pacific Testing Laboratories' Soils Engineer visited the project site to collect a soil sample (at a depth of 4' ) , and to assess the surficial roof-drainage area from the existing back-residence roof and the proposed addition-roof. VYRON KUVER CERTIFICATE NO. 9108-4025 August 21, 1991 Page 2 FIELD INVESTIGATION FINDINGS Seive analysis results indicate the soil on the property (at a depth of 4' ) is a Loamy-Sand (as categorized under the USDA soil classification system) . Percolation rates expected for this soil-type is 16-30 minutes per inch. The application rate is .60 gallons per cubic foot. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Roof drainage will require a catch-basin and infiltration system designed in accordance with section 4.5.1-3 of the King County Surface Water Design Manual (see Figure 1 for typical design details) . Drainage for approximately 1,000 square feet of roof drainage is required. As calculated, and in accordance with the King County Surface Water Design Manual, a 2' wide trench 60 feet long will be required for the drainage waters from this proposed residence addition. The trench will be a minimum of 2-1/2 feet deep, utilizing a ,minimum 6" perforated PVC pipe (see Figure 1 for additional information) . The catch-basin should be placed near the northwest corner of the addition, with the trench trending toward the northeast corner of the property. This trench placement angle will allow all infiltration to occur on your property (see figure 2, Plan View, for details) . Thank you for providing this opportunity to be of service. Existing downspouts may be combined into this system if the drainage system is adequate to handle the runoff. Please submit a design for collecting, conveying and dispersing the stormwater runoff from the roof and footing drains of the proposed addition. A downspout infiltration system shall be used, provided soils are adequate for such a system. The design and soil log shall be prepared by a professional engineer or geotechnical engineer, licensed in the State of Washington, or by a certified septic system designer. The design shall conform with Section 4 . 5 of the 1990 King County Surface Water Design Manual (KCSWDM) , a copy of which is enclosed.
