Dear Mr. Gueco:
At your request Pacific Testing Laboratories has completed the rockery
design for your residence at the above address.
On December 10, 1991 a representative from Pacific Testing was on site to
inspect the site conditions and clarify the location of the proposed
rockery. We understand it is your desire to widen the concrete driveway
along the west side of the house, by extending it into the cut bank approxi-
mately 6 - 8 feet. At this time the building pad is benched into the 20%
slope which covers the entire site. This has resulted in a 1H:1V cut face
that slopes up approximately 10 feet to the west along 7th Ave. S.W. , be-
tween the existing driveway and the street.
There is a small power pole at the southwest corner of the lot at the top of
the slope. By extending the cut in the direction of the power pole the
stability of the slope and the pole will be reduced. Therefore we strongly
recommend relocating the pole or placing the power lines underground, prior
to the construction of the rockery.
Soils on the site are dense silty sands with gravels and some cobbles. From
previous work in the area we have found that the soils are capable of sus-
taining a stable vertical cut when protected from surface erosion. Accept-
able means of protection include the use of a properly constructed rockery
with adequate drainage behind it.
The rockery will be located approximately 12 feet from the edge of 7th Ave.
S.W. . However, we do not feel that the rockery will be adversely effected
by its' proximity to the street, due to the light traffic encountered in the

It is our understanding the rockery will have a maximum height of 8 feet, in
which the highest point will be located at the southwest corner. From this
corner the rockery will taper down to a one rock height in both the norther-
ly and easterly directions. It will extend to the east approximately 20 feet
and to the north approximately 80 feet ending at the driveway entrance.
The rockery shall be constructed of 3 and 4 man rock for the first two tiers
when the final height will exceed 4 feet. The remaining layers in excess of
4 feet may consist of 2 and 3 man rock. In the areas where the final height
will be under 4 feet, 2 and 3 man rock may be used for the full height of
the rockery.
The rock shall be sound and have a minimum density of 160 pounds per cubic
foot. The long dimension of all rocks shall be placed into the slope, and
each rock shall bear on at least two rocks in the tier belay. The first
course of rocks shall be placed a minimum of 10 inches into the native soil
which shall be firm and undisturbed. The cut for the rockery must be free
standing as the rockery is not a retaining structure, but merely an erosion
control device. Behind the rockery a free draining material shall be placed
to allow for drainage. The free draining material shall be used in
conjunction with a minimum 12 inch wide layer of 2 inch to 6 inch quarry
spalls adjacent to the rockery. A 4 inch perforated PVC pipe shall be
utilized at the bottom to collect drainage. See Figure 2 for a typical
cross section.

This report has been prepared to aid in the evaluation of the site. Cru
conclusions and recommendations have been prepared in accordance with gener-
ally accepted professional engineering principles and practices. We make no
other warranty, either expressed or implied. Our conclusions are based on
the results of the field exploration and on our interpretation of surface
conditions. If conditions are encountered that appear to be different than
those described in this report, we should be notified so that we may review
and verify or modify our recommendations.
This report is provided for the information of the client only. The repro-
