Based on the criteria under Federal Way City Code (FWCC) Section 22-1601, et seq., the proposed freestanding pole sign is not permitted. The subject property qualifies for a "Medium Profile Sign" pursuant to FWCC Section 22-1601(2) (attached) and is allowed a pedestal or monument sign that meets the construction and design standards of FWCC 22-1602 et seq. (attached). The proposed pole sign meets all zoning requirements except that the sign does not contain a base. The base must be a minimum height that is 20% of the total height of the sign and meet the design criteria for either a pedestal or monument sign. Please note that there should be no visible gap between the sign base and finished grade. SUGGESTION: MODIFY PROPOSED POLE SIGN AS A MONUMENT SIGN BY ADDING A DECORATIVE WOOD BASE. 2. The hanging sign proposed is considered an under canopy sign as opposed to a wall sign. Under canopy signs are exempt from sign permits provided that the sign: 1. does not exceed the width of the canopy; 2. does not exceed eight (8) square feet in size; and 3. is at least 20 lineal feet or more from other such signs. Please note that the FWCC definition for under canopy sign states that the sign must be at a 90 degree right angle to the building. (3) A time and temperature sign may be in- cluded with any sign and such time and temperature signs shall not be included for purposes of calculating maximum sign area or maximum number of signs. To the maximum extent possible, signs should be constructed and installed so that angle irons,guywires,braces and other structural elements are not visible.
