Dear Mr. Hindman:
I have re-examined the sign permit for Emerald Electric
following_ a conversation with Sam Jacobs , attorney who drafted
the sign code for the City.
Monument signs are allowed provided certain criteria are met .
Specifically, ,the building which includes Emerald Electric , 1610
S . 344th Street, as a tenant may have a monument sign if the
following plan corrections are provided and verified.
1 . Maximum monument sign structure dimensions are 9 . 5
feet wide and 12 feet tall , landscaped as detailed in
the attached section 95 . 85 . municipal code .
2 . Total copy area for this monument sign is 109 square
feet , including both sides of the sign.
3 . Scale drawings must be provided for all existing
Emerald Electric wall signs . These drawing will be
reviewed to insure no more than 70 square feet of wall
sign copy is installed. (Note : this is the area
allowed for the whole building. If a second tenant
located in this building the copy area will not be
adjusted. ) Wall signage in excess of 70 square feet
must be removed as part of the monument sign approval .
4 . The monument sign must be at least 5 feet from all
Property lines and located outside all sight
triangles , as defined by the City.

If you provide the above material I will begin analysis of
permit number 90-809S . If I do not hear from you by July 20 ,
1990 , I will inactivate the sign permit .

1. Maintenance - All signs must be kept in good
repair and in a safe manner at all times. The
property owner must repair damaged or
deteriorated signs within 30 days of noti-
fication by the City. The area surrounding
ground mounted signs must be kept free of litter
and debris at all times.
2 . Removal - Unless otherwise specified in or
through this Code, the property owner must
remove all signs within 30 days of the date of
the closure or discontinuance of the business,
use or event with which the signs were
associated.
95 . 85 Landscaping Around Ground-Mounted Signs
An area around the base of each ground-mounted sign
equal to the sign area must be landscaped to improve
the overall appearance of the sign and to reduce the
risk of automobiles hitting the sign or supports of
the sign. This landscaping must include vegetation
and may include other materials and components such
as brick or concrete bases, planter boxes, pole
covers or decorative framing.
95 . 90 Structural Components , Overall Apcearance
To the maximum extent possible, signs should be
constructed and installed so that angle irons, guy-
wires, braces and other structural elements are not
visible. This limitation does not apply to struc-
tural elements that are an integral part of the
overall design such as decorative metal or woods .
95 . 95 Illumination Limitations on Electrical Signs
No sign may contain or utilize any of the following:
1. Any exposed incandescent lamp with a wattage in
excess of 25 watts.
2 . Any exposed incandescent lamp with an internal
or external reflector.
3 . Any continuous or sequential flashing device or
operation.
4 . Except for changing message centers, any incan-
descent lamp inside an internally lighted signs.
5. External light sources directed towards or
shining on vehicular or pedestrian traffic or on
a street.

Dear Mr. Hindman:
Preservative Paint located at 34323 Pacific Highway South,
permit number 90-808S has requested a monument sign.
Following a site inspection, it was found the site houses
only two tenants . Chapter 95 . 40 . 3 . c Municipal Code allows
monument signs only if the multi-use complex has seven or
more tenants . Accordingly, I ' m unable to approve this
permit .
Emerald Electric located at 1610 South 344th Street , permit
number 90-809S has also requested a monument sign .
Following a site visit it was found that Emerald Electric
appeared to be the sole tenant of the building. Again ,
Chapter 95 . 40 . 3c allows monument signs only if the multi-use
complex has seven or more tenants . This sign permit must
also be denied.
You may request an exception for necessary identification in
limited and unusual circumstances under the provisions in
Chapter 95 . 70 , Municipal Code , attached.
