Moran Ceotechn7ical Consultants (MGC) visited the identified site to observe geotechnical conditions relates/ to the swimming pool excavation and construction. This visit; was made at the request of Mark Robison. In addition, are have reviewed the swimming pool plan drawing prepared by Pacific Pools 2nc., d5ted February 27, 1991, and the retaining wall foundation sketch prepared by The Rvkels Sngineering Croup. Inc., dated. !larch 27, 1991. We also understand thet the planned retaining wall will be constructed of reinforced concrete in accordance with Washington State Department of Transportation (WODT) Standard Plan D --9d, approved February 13. 1991. Our observations and recommendations are presented in. this letter. The site is bordered on this northeast by 7th Avenue south, on the northwest by South 288th Place, and to the southwest by an undeveloped parcel. The site surface slopes down gently towards 7th Avenue south and a terraced, landscaped slope along South 288th Place. At the southwest edge of the property, the surface slopes down at more than 26 percent to the undeveloped lot. The swimming Pool addition will extend southwest of the present Robison :residence. The pool area will be confined on the northwest, southwest, and southeast aides by the proposed retaining wall. The retaining wall will vary from about. 7 to 12 feet in height above tho planned footing bearing elevation. A.t the southwest side, the retaining wall will be from 8 to 9 feet in ?height and the wall face will be located about 8 feet inside of the property boundary. For a wall height of 9 feet, WSDT Standard Plan D -2d calks for a total footing width of 4 feet 6 inches (4'-6") and a footing toe Width of 1'-611, leaving about 6'-6" from the extrema outside footing edge to the property line. 'WSDT D-26 also atipt.11ates that the top of the wall footing will be a minimum o'£ 2 feet below the final outside ground surface. At the maximum wall height of 11 feet, WSDT D -2d indicates a maximum applied soil bearing pressure of 1,870 pounds per square foot. (1,870 Pat). R; f1 i April 26, 1991 1010-01C.L01 Mr. & Mrs. Hark Robison page 2 The retaining wall excavation reveals a relatively dense, fine sand and gravel, glacial outwash deposit. In a confined, protected, vonditioln these soils are very acceptable for support of the proposed retaining gall and swimming pool ,structure. When exposed to runoff conditions the soils are susceptible to erosion. No evidence of groundwater seepage was observed and no distress to adjacent structures or property was noted. The native soils are capable of supporting in excess of 3,000 Def static load without significant distress, providing a safety factor of more than 1.6 for the maximum bearing pressure of the retaining Mali.. it in our opinion that the proposed retaining gall and swimming pool will be adequately supported by the exhibited sail conditions and the described design details. To prevent any degradation of the naturally stable sand soils, we r6commend that the excavation be completed and the retaining wall installed as soon as possible. The retaining wall should be backfilled with free draining materials, dennified to a stable condition. Native sand and gravel soils removed from the wail and pool excavations will be acceptable for backfill provided that no organic material or debris is nixed with the mineral aoila, Footing drains should be installed at the inside base of the wall footing and sloped to drain to approved discharge facilities. In addition, +weep holes should be placed in the retaining wall in eoniorn&ne a with the WSIDT Standard Flan 0-2d criteria. The base of the gwirming pool excavation should be sloped to drain by gravity to the retaining wall footing drain systom or an acceptable separate discharge facility. b drainage blanket df imported, clean, coarse sand and/or fine gravel should be placed at the bottom of tho parol excavation to provide positive drainage to the 9e1actad diseha:ra o. we believe that this letter addresses the critical geotechnical issues related to the described construction.
