This new location has an existing double faced pole sign of which we were allowed to reface under the prior code. The permit application submitted on June 9, 1995, under the prior code, reflected the installation of the single flteed will sign and included the reface of the existing pole sign even though a -permit for the reface was not required. The applicant is completely aware of the code requiring all nonconforming signs to be rernovcd in the year 2000, He Is also aware of his location in the proposed shopping center and how this will require the existing pole sign to be removed before the year 2000. The prior code calculated the total signage allowed for a business from the Arm frontage. When a permit for new signage was applied for this figure could not be exceeded, except when a freestanding sign was refhced. The applicant for the new signage had a dacision to make regarding tho reface of an existing sign. For example if an applicant was allowed 75 aquas feet Choy could propose a now wal131gn of 75 square feet and reface an existing freestanding sign knowing the freestanding sign would be removed in 1995. The choices were: (1) To use all the allowed square footage for the wall sign and after 1995 only a wall sign would be allowed to remain; (2) To use part of the allowed squate footage for a now wall sign, reface an existing pole sign and have the remaining square footage to utilI= for a monument SIP after 1995; (3) To use part of the allowed square footage for a wall sign and the remaining square footage for a monument sign bringing the signage into conformance prior to 1995 The applicant is requesting approval to rafaea the existing pole sign on his property knowing that the sign may be removed in a year or two. This request Is the Sarno privilege allowed to other businesses prior tD the code changes and Is the reason this application was submitted for approval on June 9, 199S.
