4. COMMISSION BUSINESS
MOTION MADE BY CHAIR HARVEYTO MOVE ITEM D OF THE AGENDA TO THE TOP OF THE AGENDA. MOTION SECONDED
BY COMMISSIONER PRATT. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY.
D. SENIOR & FINANCIAL TECH NATIONAL GRANTS
Economic Development Director Tim Johnson gave a presentation on the Americorps Seniors ARPA
Demonstration Project. This program would help aid in the replacement of live branches for seniors
by assisting them in learning the technological advances of the banking system and keep them
integrated in the technological world. There is a timeline in place for approvals on this program,
with applications due by February P, 2022. This would require a special meeting of the Senior
Advisory Commission to determine if they would like to move forward for Council consideration
and execution of the application of this project. If the application is approved, notification would
be done in June 2022 with project starting and completion July 2022-June 2024. It was determined
that a special meeting to decide on this would be held Friday, November 19th, 2021 via Zoom at
10:00am.
A. APPROVAL OF 9/15/2021 MEETING MINUTES
Motion for the approval of the Meeting Minutes from September 15th, 2021 was given by Chair
Harvey. Motion seconded by Vice -Chair Bostic. Motion passed unanimously.
B. PAMPHLET —SPONSORSHIPS
Previous sponsorship from Steel Lake Presbyterian Church for $2000, although this does not cover
the costs of the printing of the pamphlet. The City of Federal Way has been matching with $2000
to cover the difference. Sponsorships could include paid advertisements, but it would include the
page size and make the cost go up as well. Discussion for options include speaking to the printer to
see if they would donate/sponsor the pamphlet; removal of notes pages to make room for
sponsors' names. There is already a discount that has been applied.
C. SENIOR HEALTH & INFORMATION FAIR
Commissioner North presented a vision including a paper handout with ideas for the Senior Health
& Information Fair modeling it after the similar event held in Auburn. Locations were considered
including the Federal Way Performing Arts & Events Center (would have to pay for the use), the
conference area at the Federal Way Community Center (would have to pay for the use as well), or
a church (although this was not very popular). August 215Y is the annual Senior Citizen's Day, could
be the proposed day to host event to coincide with Senior Citizen's Day. Commissioner North
mentioned that the Auburn Wellness Fair charges its vendors (non -profits are free), and include a
luncheon & speaker. September is Healthy Aging Month, could be another proposed time for the
event. Proposed creating a sub -committee and exploring options to see what is possible.
Recommended inviting Rocky from Auburn Senior Center who puts on the Auburn Wellness Fair to
come and share information on how the planning is completed and gathering interest. Proposed
combining with Auburn for a joint -event. Mentioned that May is Senior Citizen's Month, but May
2022 is too soon to put this event on; recommendation for May 2023 and it was agreed. It was
agreed that a sub -committee needs to be developed soon, and it was agreed that they would come
back to the January meeting with the ideas for the Health & Information Fair, and then the work
would be divided into the sub -committees at that time. Name change from Health & Information
Fair to Resource Fair. Name would be finalized at the January meeting. Ideas to bring to the
meeting include: Topics for fair, Name, Exact Date, Weekend or Weekday, Time of Event, Ideal
Location, Sponsorship, Food/Drinks/Vendors, Advertising, etc.
5. STAFF REPORT
Deputy Mayor Honda noted that since Council has returned to in -person meetings, she
recommended that the 2nd meeting in January would be a good time to come and be presented.
Chair Harvey brought up the gun violence that has occurred recently. Seniors are very worried.
She requested information for her to give back to the senior community to answer their
questions and put them at ease. Deputy Mayor Honda noted that additional funding had been
put towards violence efforts, and recommended having Police Chief Hwang come and give tips
on the things to do and not do to stay safe. Recommended for Police Chief Hwang to come to
the January meeting to present.
