Board and Commission Application Last Updated: January 13, 2021 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? From Dumas Bay to Celebration Park, Steel Lake Park, Town Square Park and all neighborhood parks in between, Federal Way has an abundance of riches in parks throughout the city. Planning and upkeep are completed constantly. I would like to be a part of the planning and maintenance making Federal Way our livable city.. What are your prior experiences in this area? Every Saturday, I walk the length of 5-Mile Park throughout the year and see the value of the clean path. I am fortunately to have a water retention pond next to my home and see the City's maintenance on a regular basis. I have been to many events such as the Blue Poppy Day and Red White & Blue Festival. All of these require hard work of our Parks Department. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? I am a collaborative board member with ideas to share. Describe anything in your past or recent activities that may be of concern to the City or public: The Parks Department must feel kindness to those less fortunate. I have seen many encampments removed and underbrush cleared away. How will the Parks Department change with King County's purchase of hotels primarily to house the homeless? Board and Commission Application Last Updated: January 13, 2021 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? I would desire to see the parks in the community that I reside in to be safe for my kids and the other kids in the community. I don't have a large backyard, not even big enough to build a play set for my four children so I depend on Federal Way parks to be safe and kept up so me and my children can have a fun and peaceful time of play outside and make good memories. Also, with the amount of apartments in the city there are also many families like ours that need parks to bring their children to. What are your prior experiences in this area? I have been part of my Unions Representative boards that monitor and resolve issues within the Union. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? I have been a Supervisor in my Union at the Port of Seattle ILWU for over thirteen years now and I believe I can assist in vital decision making in improving and maintaining parks and recreation in the City of Federal Way. I want to get involved to help preserve our amazing parks. What are your prior experiences in this area? For 13 years I worked for John Foley, the previous proprietor of Time Out Ale House. I watched him build his business by sponsoring teams in the Federal Way sports leagues. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? Board and Commission Application Last Updated: January 13, 2021 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? It benefits the City to gain new perspectives on our parks and recreation needs from newly appointed residents. However, we've experienced the near -complete turnover of Parks Commissioners in recent years, and currently have only five members. Thus, I believe it's also useful to retain current long -serving commissioners for their institutional memory. What are your prior experiences in this area? I've served as a P&RC member since 2012, including one year as chairperson; and have participated in development of the past two PROS plans, two new community park facilities, and numerous other projects and activities. Prior to retirement, I've also worked in several cities that provided parks/recreation services and operated community centers (see attached resume). How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? Providing advice to Parks staff and recommendations to City Council. Describe anything in your past or recent activities that may be of concern to the City or public: None that I'm aware of. PUBLIC DISCLOSURE: This application and each attachment submitted are subject to public disclosure. If requested, they will be provided without redaction or notice. Board and Commission Application Last Updated: January 13, 2021 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? I have lived in Federal Way for over 5 years, and I have been active in the community. This is a place I feel I can be of service. What are your prior experiences in this area? I am of African decent and born in America. All throughtout my life I have been a community activist, organizer and or community leader. I have always been about Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusion. For all people reguardless of their age, color, culture or background. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? As a voting member, I see myself as a connector and visionary. I not only see and hear but I listen to the people and I am able to help others to understand what is being said. Also to help bring about positive Inclusion, Equality, Equity and Diversity in more than just words, to our community. Describe anything in your past or recent activities that may of concern to the City or public: I don't know of anything that may be of any concern. Some may think I an to outspoken, even though I speak the truth. Others that are present when I speak, will call me after and say they are glad I say what I said . Even though they did not say anything to support when I said it. So I guess I am known for saying what others are thinking and for whatever reason are not able to say it. I do beleive we are more alike than we are different. Board and Commission Application Last Updated: January 13, 2021 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? I am interested in contributing to this community in which I live in a new way. I am truly appreciative of the diversity of life, belief, ability and experience represented in what I know of the people of Federal Way. I am eager to learn more and help amplify efforts and voices throughout this city. I am also deeply connected to the idea of helping people engage with one another in meaningful ways; the Commission s dedication to ensure access to information and resources for all resonates with me. What are your prior experiences in this area? As an educator, I've spent the past 20+ years in service of learning communities. The hallmark of every successful endeavor was that the culture of each entity had genuine access, agency and encouragement to be reflected in the collective efforts. In my experience, that could include identities related to ethnic, economic, faith -based, neuro-diversity, etc. I am proud to say that my professional and personal experiences reflect my belief that every life has value which is a message that should be communicated to everyone, everyday; if not in words, in deeds. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? I am interested in helping to support the mission and brand promise of the Commission through collective effort, representation, planning, leadership and boots on the ground. I value the opportunities to learn more about the people and causes that make up this city and engage in the work needed to further the policies that the City government establishes in support of them. I have learned a lot and got the opportunity to share, explorer, utilize my knowledge and skills in different ways. I have also collaborated and participated with several volunteering teams and boards in advising in the development of systems, policies, infrastructure, and frameworks to service communities effectively and to eliminate disparities, and inequalities. My interpersonal skills will also support the commissioning work; these include flexibility, organization skills, outcome -oriented, committed and passionate, self -motivated, team player, innovative, respect for others, acknowledgment, and embracing people's cultural values other than mine and open-minded. Given the opportunity to volunteer on commission/ board for the City of Federal way, my contribution will support the Mayor and Board members to the City of Federal Way the vision and the efforts to support communities in the Federal way community. Looking forward to serving our communities to create social change and growth.
