City of Federal Way WM REDUCES RESIDENTIAL CONTAMINATION THROUGH CLEAN CART PROGRAM WM developed the Clean Cart program to educate residential customers on how to properly recycle and reduce contamination. The Clean Cart program has continued to be effective in helping customers reduce contamination and customers have shown continued improvement. The program begins with our drivers first identifying residents who need help cleaning up their recycling. Then our public education and outreach team follows up with these customers, offering guidelines, photographs of the offending materials, and one-on-one assistance (available in multiple languages). WM staff contact customers through mail, email, and phone calls to deliver resources to improve their recycling. As a result of these efforts, Clean Cart participants were able to reduce contaminated recycle, and WM continues to report our progress to the City on a monthly basis. ALL STARS CAMPAIGNS WM outreach staff recognized and promoted sustainability through the brand new All Stars Campaign. This campaign focused on recognizing the diligent efforts of our customers and how they strive to reduce contamination and promote sustainability. This campaign also provided creative opportunities to promote recycling education and deliver resources helpful in reducing contamination. This campaign was promoted through a networking event and a contest encouraging our customers to reduce contamination and rewarding those that recycled right. COMMERCIAL WM hosted a sustainable business workshop and networking event in partnership with the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce. MULTIFAMILY A multifamily property in Federal Way was recognized for their efforts to reduce contamination and educate their residents. Using post -consumer recycled content will help create market demand for recycled plastic. A stakeholder group is considering adding more plastic packaging to similar legislation in 2022. The measure gained bi-partisan support. The legislature passed a Low Carbon Fuel Standard in 2021. The measure will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the carbon intensity of fuel used in the transportation sector. By decreasing the carbon intensity of fuel, the program aims to reduce GHG in Washington state to 20% below 2017 levels by 2038. In Washington State, 78% of our collection vehicles run on Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). Washington joins California and Oregon with a low carbon fuel standard.
