RESOLUTION NO. 92-9S
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FEDERAL WAY, WASHINGTON, URGING THE KiNG
COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD TO ADOPT A POLICY ON THE
PLACEMENT OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINES WHiCH
BALANCES THE ABILITY OF LIBRARY USERS TO ENJOY
FREE ACCESSIBILITY TO DIVERSE TYPES OF MA TERlALS
WITH CONSIDERATION FOR THE SPECIAL SENSITIVITIES
OF YOUNG LIBRARY USERS.
WHEREAS, the Federal Way City Council recognizes and appreciates the efforts
of the King County Library Board and the hundreds of local citizens who made the new regional
library in Federal Way a reality; and
WHEREAS, citizens of the community have expressed a strong desire to have the
"Playboy" magazine moved from the display area of this new facility; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes the public has a right to access all materials
at the library; and
WHEREAS, the Council further believes that children should be discouraged from
viewing materials of a questionable nature in a public facility; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FEDERAL WAY DOES HEREBY
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
That in the spirit of cooperation and responsiveness, the Federal Way City
Council urges the King County Library Board to direct that "Playboy" magazine be placed
behind the counter, in a manner that does not substantially restrict accessibility for more mature
Federal Way library users.
